How to Clean Your Blend Makeup Brushes: Professional & Deep Cleaning Guide

How to Clean Your Blend Makeup Brushes: Professional & Deep Cleaning Guide

At Blend, brush hygiene is something we take seriously. As a professional makeup artist, I know first-hand how important it is to keep your tools clean - not just for flawless makeup application, but for skin health, safety, and brush longevity.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through the professional methods I personally use to clean Blend Makeup Brushes, from quick spot cleans between clients to deeper cleansing techniques for long-term care. Whether you’re a working makeup artist or maintaining your personal kit at home, these steps will help you keep your brushes performing at their best.

Why Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes Matters

  • Prevents bacteria build-up

  • Protects your skin from breakouts and irritation

  • Maintains brush performance and softness

  • Extends the lifespan of your Blend brushes

What You’ll Need

  • IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) or professional brush cleaner

  • Clean cloth or disposable towelettes

  • Small dish (plastic, ceramic, or metal)

  • Brush shampoo

  • Lukewarm water

  • Towel

Method One: Quick Clean (Spot Cleaning)

Clean Time: 1–5 minutes
Best for: Colour changes, between clients, daily use

Spot cleaning is the fastest way to refresh your brushes when you’re working quickly.

Steps:

  1. Wipe away any excess makeup from the brush.

  2. Spray IPA or brush cleaner directly onto the bristles.

  3. Gently wipe the brush back and forth on a clean cloth or towelette.

  4. Repeat until no product transfers onto the cloth.

  5. Leave to air dry for a few minutes.

Pro Tip:
Avoid spraying cleaner onto the ferrule (the metal part). Over time, alcohol can weaken the glue holding the brush together.

✔ Brushes are dry and ready to use within minutes thanks to IPA’s fast evaporation.

Method Two: Deep Clean with IPA (Dip Method)

Clean Time: 10–15 minutes
Best for: Heavily used brushes, deeper product removal

This method cleans deeper into the bristles while still drying quickly.

Steps:

  1. Pour a small amount of IPA or brush cleaner into a dish.

  2. Dip the bristles into the liquid without submerging past the ferrule.

  3. Gently swirl the brush in circular motions to fully saturate the hairs.

  4. Wipe excess liquid and makeup onto a clean cloth.

  5. Repeat if necessary until the brush is completely clean.

  6. Leave to air dry for several minutes.

✔ Brushes will dry slightly slower than spot cleaning but are still ready the same day.

Method Three: In-Depth Deep Clean with Brush Shampoo

Clean Time: 12–24 hours
Best for: Full hygiene cleanse, weekly or bi-weekly maintenance

This method removes deep product build-up and bacteria using water and shampoo.

Steps:

  1. Lightly dampen the bristles with lukewarm water.

  2. Apply a small amount of brush shampoo to your palm or a silicone cleaning pad.

  3. Gently swirl the brush to create a lather.

  4. Rinse carefully, keeping water away from the ferrule.

  5. Repeat until the water runs clear.

  6. Gently squeeze out excess water using a towel.

  7. Lay brushes flat or at a slight angle to dry overnight.

Drying Tip:
Never stand brushes upright while wet - this allows water to seep into the ferrule and weaken the glue.

✔ Allow 12–24 hours drying time before use, especially when working with clients.

Final Hygiene & Safety Tips

  • Always ensure brushes are completely clean and dry before use.

  • Test brushes on a clean cloth after drying to confirm no product remains.

  • Use IPA and brush cleaners in a well-ventilated area.

  • Store cleaning products safely according to brand guidelines.

Keep Your Blend Brushes Performing Like New
